  Global Hunger Index 2020: India ranks 94 out of 107 countries, under ‘serious’ category • India ranks 94 among 107 countries in the Global Hunger Index 2020.  • According to the report, with a score of 27.2, India has a level of hunger that is “serious”. • India’s rank was 102 out of 117 countries last year. Details: • In the index, India features behind Nepal (73), Pakistan (88), Bangladesh (75), Indonesia (70) among others.  • Out of the total 107 countries, only 13 countries fare worse than India including countries like Rwanda (97), Nigeria (98), Afghanistan (99), Liberia (102), Mozambique (103), Chad (107) among others. • According to the report, 14 per cent of India’s population is undernourished.  PLASMA THERAPY • Recently published findings on convalescent plasma therapy on Covid-19 patients have triggered a debate over its efficacy. • After the country’s largest such trial, known by the acronym PLACID, found that convalescent plasma was ineffective in arresting Covid-19, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has been considering dropping this option from the national guidelines. • Plasma is the liquid part of the blood. Convalescent plasma, extracted from the blood of patients recovering from an infection, is a source of antibodies against the infection. • The Plasma therapy involves using their plasma to help others recover. For Covid-19, this has been one of the treatment options. The donor would have to be a documented case of Covid-19 and healthy for 28 days since the last symptoms.

  What is Exposure Notifications System?  In May, Apple and Google jointly launched the Exposure Notifications System (ENS) which consists of the Exposure Notification API to supplement manual COVID-19 contact tracing efforts. Apps developed by public health authorities based on the Exposure Notification API use privacy-preserving technology and Bluetooth Low Energy. A user can choose to turn on or off, the Exposure Notifications. Traditional methods of contact tracing are critical to containing the spread of infection. Technology can support and augment these efforts by allowing public health authorities to quickly notify people who may have been exposed to a person who has contracted COVID-19, including those the person might not know directly. This starts with Exposure Notifications on your smartphone. These will help your public health authority alert you if you’ve been exposed to COVID-19.

Unlike every other pandemic to sweep the earth in our lifetime, Coronavirus seems to be giving us an education. Confined to our homes, we get a chance to process things with a mind clear of rush, anxiety and unnecessary workloads. And what do we see? Our mothers toiling in the kitchen. Our grandparents looking for a conversation. Our siblings searching for a playmate. Our fathers worrying themselves out of their minds. Even our neighbors, with a plethora of their own needs. Remember that superheroes don't exist, until we will them to.  Be a helping hand , a supportive shoulder , a friendly smile , a willing ear , for this might be the only chance you get. Thus, when this pandemic blows over and you walk out of your homes, cherish the thought that you gave somebody a reason to smile . 😇
